Balancing Work, College, and My Wellbeing

blog post author icon   blog post published date icon   08/14/25

Each year SupplementRelief.com provides a $500 bi-annual scholarship award to one deserving post-secondary (university or community college) student who provides the winning essay promoting a healthier living lifestyle. We are proud to announce our Fall 2025 Health & Wellness scholarship recipient Alliyah Henderson from Augusta University.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is a priority for me as a full-time college student studying dental hygiene at Augusta University. Balancing my classwork, clinical work, social life, and self- care requires intentional effort, and I make conscious choices every day to ensure my well-being. From my diet and exercise routine to mental health and social connections, I strive to maintain a healthy approach to my life. Living on the health science campus at AU provides me with numerous resources that make it easier to stay on top of my physical and mental well-being. By focusing on nutrition, exercise, rest, and emotional wellness, I create a sustainable and fulfilling lifestyle that supports both my academic and personal goals.

Eating well is a key part of my daily routine. I always make sure to have breakfast before heading to class because I know that starting the day with something in my stomach improves my focus and gives me higher energy. Skipping breakfast can lead to fatigue and reduce my concentration, which is something I cannot afford as a dental hygiene student. I aim to eat a balanced breakfast that includes protein and carbohydrates to fuel my day. In addition to eating breakfast, I stay hydrated throughout the day by carrying my favorite Stanley cup filled with water. Proper hydration is essential for overall health, as it supports digestion, circulation, and cognitive function. Staying hydrated also helps me avoid unnecessary headaches and fatigue, which can interfere with my productivity.

Since I have a busy schedule with classes from 8 AM to 12 PM and work from 1 PM to 5 PM, I make sure to plan my meals ahead of time. I try to incorporate whole foods, lean proteins, fruits, and veggies into my diet to ensure I am getting the nutrients I need. I also avoid excessive processed foods and sugary drinks like dark sodas or energy drinks, as they can lead to energy crashes and negatively impact my productivity and my health in the long run.

Exercise is another important part of my healthy lifestyle. Living on the health science campus gives me access to campus recreational gym, which allows me to stay active even with a packed schedule. I take advantage of the gym and also use the designated running areas on campus to get in some cardio. Regular exercise helps me maintain my physical health, reduces stress, and boosts my mood. Since my schedule is structured with classes in the morning and work in the afternoon, I often fit in exercise either before class or in the evenings when I have time. I enjoy a mix of workouts, including yoga, cardio, and stretching. Some days, I prefer to take a brisk walk or run around campus, especially when the weather is nice and warm. Even on days when I am too busy to go to the gym, I make sure to stay active by incorporating some kind of movement into my routine. Whether that's taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking between classes, I try to keep my body moving throughout the day. Exercise is not just about physical fitness for me, it also plays a major role in relieving stress and improving my mental well-being.

My time management is crucial for my success as a student and for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. With my structured schedule of classes in the morning and work in the afternoon, I have to be intentional about how I use my evenings. After getting home, I always take the time to shower and eat before studying. This small routine allows me to reset and avoid feeling overwhelmed. I also make it a priority to complete assignments early so that I can enjoy my weekends without stress. By staying ahead of deadlines, I reduce the chances of last-minute stress and anxiety. This approach not only helps me academically but also allows me to maintain a healthy balance between work and my social life.

Getting enough rest is another essential yet a favorite aspect of my lifestyle. I maintain a pretty normal sleep schedule because I know that my sleep will directly impact my ability to function. Lack of sleep can lead to decreased concentration, mood swings, and overall poor health. As a student and dental assistant, I need to be alert and attentive, so I make sure to get enough rest each night. I also listen to my body when I need a break. If I am feeling exhausted or unwell, I allow myself to take a rest day. Pushing through exhaustion can lead to burnout, which is why I make self-care a priority. Rest is just as important as productivity, and I have learned that taking a step back when needed helps me perform better in the long run.

Taking care of my mental health is just as important as taking care of my physical health. Augusta University provides free therapy and counseling services, which I take advantage of whenever I need support. Having access to professional guidance is a great resource, and I believe that seeking help when needed is a sign of strength, not weakness. I also practice self-care by journaling about my day or my feelings. Writing helps me process my emotions and reflect on my experiences. It allows me to clear my mind and gain perspective on any challenges I may be facing. Journaling has been an effective way for me to manage stress, stay organized, and maintain a positive mindset. I make sure to spend time with friends to maintain my mental and emotional well-being. Social connections are important, and I make time to hang out with friends on weekends. Whether we are going out for dinner, watching a movie, or simply catching up, socializing helps me relax and recharge. Having a support system keeps me grounded and reminds me that I am not alone.

Living a healthy lifestyle as a full-time college student and part-time dental assistant requires effort and intentionality, but it is entirely possible. By prioritizing nutrition, exercise, rest, and mental well-being, I am able to maintain a balanced and fulfilling life. The resources available to me at Augusta University, along with my personal commitment to self-care, allow me to thrive academically and personally. Taking care of my health is not just about feeling good in the present it is an investment in my future. By establishing healthy habits now, I am setting myself up for long-term success, both in my career and in life. No matter how busy my schedule gets, I will continue to prioritize my well-being, knowing that a healthy lifestyle is the foundation for achieving my goals and living a happy, fulfilling life.
